I’ve seen him read a couple times in San Francisco — once was a rather rare / big reading featuring Gary Snyder / Ursula Le Guine / Robert Bly / W.S. Merwin — my late poet-friend Phil Phillips attended the event with me (plus perhaps a few other friends, don’t recall) — probably at the Palace of Fine Arts, maybe late 1980s. Pretty sure that was where I heard Snyder recite one of his best [to me] poems, titled something line Walking the Manhattan Bedrock [maybe he used a diff. word than Manhattan but anyway that’s the setting] with a refrain: “in the sea of information.”

Also around that time, attended a sort of seminar thing with Gary & his wife, in an experimental series at a museum-ish science place in SF: the Exploratorium. But the only time I really shared words w/ Gary was at a bookstore reading on DC about a decade later (late 1990s / early 2000s). He’s now in this 90s. Saw a current photo of him on FB today — Chinese poet Wang Ping has some event with him. She says he’s doing ok.
