The incident to which I allude took place in the summer of 1975, when W. S. Merwin and the poet Dana Naone attended a retreat led by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche in Snowmass, Colorado. The story was fairly recently retold by Emily Temple on LitHub ("he Night W.S. Merwin Was Stripped Naked by a Charismatic Buddhist Leader"). She does a decent job of recounting the event & thinking it through. Previously, I'd read another account of this story & had also perused a monograph "The Party" (to which -- in a PDF version -- Ms. Temple links in her article).
